Obesity is considered the second main cause of preventable death in the United States. Many people are unhappy with their present weight, but the vast majority are not certain how to change it. Being fit and healthy is really about being at a weight that is right for you. Weight control is about long-term success. People who lose weight rapidly by crash diets or other extreme measures commonly gain back all (and commonly more) of the weight they lost, as they have not permanently changed their habits. The body likes dull alterations when it comes to food and physical exercise. For example, somebody who has not done physical activities for a long time should not hasten to run miles a day. The struggle to do so will leave you feeling disappointed and demotivated, and you are also far more likely to cause damage to yourself and set your fitness levels back further. The same happens to obese people who suddenly start starving themselves. Crash diets can lead to shortage of nutrients and vitamins that your body requires to function properly. The body uses food for energy. Any excess energy is stored as fat. This means if you consume more food than your body needs to function properly, you will put on weight. To lose weight, you need to get your body to use up these stores of fat. The most effective way to do this is to reduce the amount of calories you consume and raise your levels of activity. Consume water instead of fizzy drinks and fruit cordials, swap whole milk for semi-skimmed, eat less lunch than usual, stop taking sugar in tea and coffee, have smaller portions of the food you love, cut out unhealthy treats - such as sweets, sugary biscuits and crisps - between meals, reduce alcohol intake. You should think of weight loss in terms of perpetually altering your eating habits. While weight-loss goals are commonly set in term of weeks, the end game is to maintain these changes over months and years. Someone who starts to do exercise more, but sustains the same diet and calorie intake, will almost certainly lose weight. No matter if you loathe gyms, even light physical exercise, such as a short 20 minute walk, will be beneficial if done on a regular basis. Each time you do physical exercise more than usual, you burn calories and fat. There are many ways to increase the amount of activity you do. Team sports, Pilates classes, jogging, walking and cycling will all make you fitter. All these things will impact upon your health positively.
