| We live in the time of a quick technological development. There have been introduced a great many types of weapons, including chemical and biological weapons, since the appearance of prehistoric spears. This article features the weapon that became a major breakthrough in the weapons industry. This is the Colt Revolver. Samuel Colt got the idea of inventing a pistol with a revolving cylinder containing a few bullets which could be fired through a single barrel when he was working as a seaman. As soon as he came back to the USA he continued to work on his invention, and in 1835 his 5-shot gun was patented. It was a breakthrough, because it converted a gun into a multiple-shot gun. In 1836 Colt established his Patent Arms Manufacturing firm in Paterson, New Jersey. As well as his five-shot firearms, he made rifles and shotguns. Even though he made a breakthrough, sales were generally slow, and in 1842 the factory was closed down. A few years later he developed a device that could detonate under water by remote control. Later on he became heavily involved in telegraph engineering and designed the first underwater telegraph cable. In 1847 Colt introduced a six-shot Walker revolver. Shortly afterwards, the United States government ordered 1, 000 revolvers for use in the Mexican War. Colt established a new firm in Hartford, Connecticut. By 1855 Colt run the biggest private arms producing facility in the world. He manufactured a great selection of revolvers. His Navy Colt was especially popular with gunfighters. During the Civil War Colt's firm sold 300, 000 revolvers and 100, 000 rifles to both sides. After the inventor died, the firm was managed by Colt's wife and employed 1, 500 workers. Samuel Colt and his firearms played a huge role in the history of a developing America. So popular was the Colt revolver during the latter half of the 1800s that it was perhaps the best-known firearm not only in this country but also in Canada, Mexico, and many European countries. To this day, the name Colt suggests arms to most Americans. |
