Our busy lifestyles and schedules packed with long hours at work, hours at the gym, and shuttling our children to afterschool activities make it easy to overlook simple things. Sometimes we even forget to make time for grocery shopping, or having the oil in our cars changed! With so many obligations and so little time, it is easy to overlook certain health routines such as going to the dentist. So many of us forget that we need to visit the dentists, others avoid the dental office from fear or aversion, and still others think that they simply do not need to see the dentist until they have an oral health emergency. But visiting the dentist is important! Even if you brush and floss your teeth every day, you still need to make routine visits to your family dentist. Is it time to visit the dentist again? If you have not seen your dentist for a check-up and routine examination in the last six months, it is time to make an appointment. The general agreement among dentists is that people should come in for a routine check-up twice per year, once every six months. Taking care of your teeth and gums at home is not enough to achieve optimal oral health. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing are not enough to prevent all oral health problems. Check ups and examinations can catch problems in their early stages that you may notice. Many problems manifest without pain or symptoms, and can go unnoticed until their advanced stages. Preventative dentistry can stop these oral health issues before they reach their painful stages, and often save time, money, and physical ailment. Of course, there will always be exceptions to every rule. Not everyone will need to visit the dentist two times each year. Patients with very low risk of cavities and gum disease may only need to visit the dentist once each year. Often, patients who have a proven history of good oral health will be put on a different, less frequent schedule. On the other hand, patients who are more susceptible to oral health problems may need to visit more than twice a year! This may include people who smoke, people with diabetes, people with a weaker immune response to bacterial infection, and people who tend to get cavities or build up plaque. So, is it time to visit the dentist? It probably will be soon! Don't wait until you have a serious problem to visit your dentist. Regular check-ups, cleanings, and examinations could save you a lot of pain, money, and even appointments in the long run! sedation dentistry, raleigh dentist
