| Every town in Ukraine where over 20, 000 residents live has, at least, one hotel. In small towns, these hotels are usually from the Soviet era and can be inexpensive - around $10 USD for a double room. In bigger towns (50-200 thousand residents) you commonly find a number of hotels: some are private, others are state-run. Service in Ukrainian hotels Needless to say, there are normally no English-speaking staff members employed in state-run hotels in small towns, and they offer clients USSR standards of service and comfort. If you're an intrepid young backpacker who is short of money, you may not care that there's no telephone, the beds are somewhat short, the closet door is broken, there's no hot water, and the temperature hovers around 16°C. Nonetheless, other categories of foreign tourists are usually displeased with the service in such hotels. Private hotels are frequently — but not always — both more expensive and have higher standards of service. Some private hotels Ukrainian towns and cities are splendid, but English-speaking staff is unlikely to work there. In the Carpathian region, there are many marvellous family-run privately owned inns with hospitable hosts and excellent living conditions. Yet, outside the Carpathians family-run hotels and guesthouses are almost nonexistent. Modern hotels observing the western standards service and living conditions are located in all large cities of Ukraine and in resorts of Crimea and the Carpathians. These hotels frequently have higher rates than the same ones abroad. This is because the country is short of three, four, and five-star hotels, and hence people would rather pay more for good living conditions. Booking a hotel in Ukraine In towns and cities, you can reserve a room straight on arrival to the hotel, provided that you have a passport. Nevertheless, in large cities - for instance, Kiev, Odessa - you should book beforehand. Besides, keep in mind that there aren't any tourist information agencies that can help you book a room (except for an agency at Lviv airport). Advanced reservation procedures may differ from hotel to hotel. You can book a room over the phone by providing your name and the time you are planning to arrive. If you are late, they may give your room to someone else. Rooms in up-to-date hotels usually need to be reserved through a travel agency or online on either the hotel's site or the website of a travel agency.
