At present the LAPTOP has replaced the desk computer because it is compact, portable and mobile. You can take it on board an aircraft, on a yacht or anywhere else and go on working etc. The only downside is that it has limited energy. Having been used for a few hours, the battery gets lower and should be re-charged for further use. Laptop manufacturers have not invented a laptop yet which can run for a few days. still, some significant steps have been undertaken to prolong battery's life. There are 3 major kinds of laptop batteries distinguished. Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) batteries were the first batteries that could be re-charged. They were reasonably priced and had a high output. Still, they were rather heavy and are not used today any more. Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) laptop batteries are sometimes used in older models of laptops. They have a higher output in comparison to NiCd batteries. More than that, they are believed to be cheaper and safer. The only disadvantage is that they have the so-called memory effect. If not discharged completely, the NiMH battery will remember it and will put out less energy than it should do. Lithium Ion (LiON) laptop batteries are commonly used in laptops of the new generation. They are lighter comparing with NiCd and NiMH batteries and have no memory effect. Nevertheless, LiON batteries cost more. Actually the price for a battery depends upon how long you can exploit your laptop. So, it largely depends upon purposes you use your laptop for. Those who travel widely, need an extended energy source. If time has come to replace your battery, keep in mind that it should be compatible with a laptop model, despite the fact that a lot of batteries these days are compatible with all makes. After that consider two main ratings on it: Volts and Milliamps. The voltage should be within 10% of the original battery voltage. When buying a battery, always seek the one with the biggest Milliamps. An external laptop battery is attached to a laptop via an AC adaptor plug which includes an adapter, a cord as well as thirteen other connectors. When buying an AC adapter, insure that it will correspond to the voltage and current output. These data are commonly provided on labels of a laptop and on the original adapter. The letter 'V' denotes voltage and 'A' or 'mA' - current output. The voltage figure should be within 10% of your original adapter voltage. The Amps figure can be higher but should not be lower in comparison to the original current output. One more thing to keep in mind is that form of a battery and the tip dimensions of an AC adaptor should be identical to the original ones. Needless to say that any device should be exploited properly. Laptop power sources are no exception. Store and use them following safety regulations and they will serve you longer.
