It was said about in the books of ancient Greeks like Aristotle and Plato, but the puppet art wasn't described in details. Puppet dolls were also applied as attributes in various religious rituals long time ago. But at present time puppet dolls constitute a symbol of joy and are applied to entertain people, both kids and grown-ups. In general a puppet doll represents an inanimate figure of a person or an animal. The figure is animated or manipulated by puppeteer which allows to organize plays with puppets. Puppet art is rather developed now. There are different kinds of puppets, the most widespread amongst them are the below mentioned. Hand puppets, also known as glove puppets, are the most widespread type of puppets. Hand puppet dolls consist of a head made from different materials, like wood, papier-mache or cardboard cylinders, and a body representing a cloth in the form of glove that is put on the hand of puppeteer. If puppeteer moves fingers, the puppet doll becomes animated. Amidst varieties of hand puppets is finger puppets. As it is evident from the term such puppet dolls are put on fingers. They are very small and look like children toys. Another widespread form of puppet dolls is represented by marionettes. Marionette constitutes a puppet with strings attached to various parts of its body. By pulling these strings puppeteer can manipulate the puppet doll and make it move. Marionettes are applied both for entertainment and in professional puppet plays. There is one more amazing form of puppet dolls called shadow puppets. A shadow puppet represents a flat figure cut out in such a way that, when using a directed light, it produce a shadow of a certain personage on a translucent screen. Shadow theater originated in Asia in the 5th century. It used to enjoy wide popularity in different parts of the world. These days shadow puppet theater is extremely popular in Indonesia. |
